LONDON, MILAN, NEW YORK, PARIS, these are the few places you would definitely during
fashion week. Wait, we missed Tokyo, part of the world’s biggest fashion week.
Japan’s fashion has evolved and it is recognized and followed by many
countries. Japanese people have a few types of fashion street styles. The more
popular fashion street styles are Lolita, Visual kei, Cult party kei, Mori girl
and Shironuri. Let’s go in detail for each of the fashion styles.
Lolita fashion is
one of the most common in Japan, also known as ‘cute’ fashion. There are many
different of Lolita. Here are the few:
This is a style
that started in the mid-1980s that consist of striking coloured make-ups,
flashy costumes and unique hairstyles which is similar to Western glam rock.
This fashion style is created by the Japanese musicians including X Japan, Luna
Sea and Malice Mizer.
This is a new fashion style based on Western religious artifacts like cross or bibles and it is named after the Harajuku Shop Cult Party which is now known as the Virgin Mary. The common dressing up includes fabric in soft colours, crosses wired in yarn, with many cream lace, satin bows and bible prints. This fashion style often emphasizes more on natural makeup and simple hair-dos with roses.
Mori means
‘forest’ which uses soft and loose garments like floaty dresses and cardigans.
It is more to vintage styles like using natural fabrics and hand-made
accessories. The colour is more to light and neutral. Somehow patterns like
gingham and florals is also used. Curled
bangs and braids are the signature for hairstyles. It creates a doll-like
appearance but more casual and earthly manner.
Shironuri means
‘painted in white’. It’s named that way
because people who dress in this style puts on white makeup. Traditional
Japanese fashion elements are also similar to the Shironuri style, as well as
gothic Lolita style. One of the well-known Shironuri artists is Minori.
Japan do have
numerous famous fashion designers that have made it to the international
fashion brands. Fashion clothing brands like Kenzo, Uni Qlo, Hatsuno Endo.
Recently, Louis
Vuitton famous designer, Marc Jacobs, has collaborated with one of Japan’s
biggest popstars, Hatsune Miku on her stage wardrobe for The End.
Another Japan fashion designer, Yayoi Kusama, collaborated with Louis Vuitton to design a range of Louis Vuitton products. The collection is called ‘Infinitely Kusama’.
